Tuesday night work 6/7/11

Started off the night throwing 6 bowls for Emma. This past weekend, I sat and trimmed 16 pieces... 6 bowls and 10 plates. It took forever partly because they were too dry and partly because there were so many. It was very hard to maintain my concentration while doing this. Thank goodness for other people in the studio to talk to! And thank goodness I can talk and trim at the same time.

I think that I will limit how many small pieces I throw in the future. 6 at a time or so, because the trimming is such a bore and by the time I get to the last one, I almost stop caring about how they look. Not good for someone who is as particular as I am!

After throwing the bowls, I trimmed a vase. I think July will be vase month. More little plates in between.

Ended the night carving. I know it doesn't look like I've gotten very far on this one. I haven't. It's going to take a lot longer than I expected or planned on. I did discuss using China paints on this piece once it's glazed and fired. That way, I might be able to get some skin tones on the mermaid.

Love doing experiments like this.

Of Eggcups and bowls

Yes, I'm on a bowl making kick again. Here are four 6 lb bowls. Well, two of them are 5 and 3/4 pounds . The other two are 6 and 1/4 pounds. It's kind of interesting how much of a difference half a pound can make in size. I know I keep posting photos of bowls that have been freshly thrown, but never any finished bowls. I will do my best to take photos of them.


Here are the eggcups that are glazed. Hopefully, they will get fired in the next kiln load. Will take photos of them and post!

Will be working on a seahorse boat tonight. Then, nothing much for the next few weeks because I'm off to Hawaii!

And one of the bowls from the previous post jumped off the bat and plunged to its squishy death. So, I'm down a bowl. It's all good. Some bowls are just not meant to be.

Oh, and the Mermaid is at the wood kiln. She lost a part of her tail before being bisque fired, but I was able to reattach it. Keep your fingers crossed that the tail stays on when she is final fired!

Where does the time go???

Hello! Yes, it has been quite some time since I've updated this blog. I'd say I was busy, but I was only a bit busy.

I attended the Spring sale in May and took a break from pottery after that. Not much of a break, mind you, but nevertheless, a break. I also went to Ireland for 5 days which did eat into some pottery making time.

Ah well, enough excuses.

Above you see are some bowls I threw last weekend. I had my parents over to my new condo and realized I had no serving bowls whatsoever! Silly me. I had sold all my bowls. And since bowls are such a big seller at sales, I decided to make more.

Usually, I work on commission pieces first and then work on sale stuff. This means I'm always facing a crunch around the sale time. This time, I decided to make a ton of bowls and other stock and then, right before the sale, I will work on commission pieces (egg cups for Emma and Lisa, a popover holder for Tina, and some ikebana vases for a friend's boyfriend's mom...)

So, that's my plan. I'll try to do better about keeping you updated on this!
